COVID-19 Present a case for a quick 5G rollout.
The whole world is facing this pandemic and fighting against this in one way or another, and I am hoping we will come out of this very soon. But what this period has given us is nothing but learning that we should be ready for any contingency in the future.
We have been hearing about the industries shutting down because of the reduced manpower due to Lockdowns, many industries might face this issue in the coming months. But, In the last two months whatever we have discussed and mostly focusing is about the current economy descending, a current lot of skill set sitting idle at home.
What I would like to highlight is the concern about the elements which will build the future economy, infrastructure, doctors, engineers, lawyers and experts from every field. What has affected the most is the shutting down of schools, institutions, universities which will affect the students who were pursuing a career in their respective fields.
We have stopped the examinations, let's forget about the academic level we have to postpone the competitive exams because of which means no one would be able to get the admission this year and at the same time there will be no graduations this year from their colleges. On one side this will create more number of students will be applying next year at the same time which will make it more difficult to get into colleges and on the other side due to unfinished graduations of the current batch will lead to no job applications to companies and hence there will be a long queue fighting for the place in the organization by the time things get back to normalcy. This could lead to big un-employment gridlock which any country might face.
Schools and Institutions are trying their best to conduct online sessions, providing materials to students but the problem is that not everyone at home has the speed and connectivity to download the contents on time or watch live classes as whatever bandwidth we have at home is shared among all the users nearby using all kind of necessary and mostly unnecessary applications. So what they need a dedicated bandwidth for academic purpose.
Yes, I agree these are tough days and these measures are necessary as nothing comes before the human life but we cannot just hope for things to get better and then start working in the same ways as we do in a normal scenario, because we don’t know what will happen if a new virus appears next year we just cannot stop the everything again.
This is where a case arises that we have to build solutions and build them quickly enough to handle the contingency next time. For now, solutions lie in 5G.
Govt should expedite the 5G rollout they should relax the norms for the 5G Spectrum. They should focus more on setting it up first and can do the financials later. This is not for 1 or 2 countries, this for across the globe.
When I say 5G, I focus on standalone Configuration which includes 5G core. There will not be enough benefits by providing 5G with existing 4G setup (Non-Standalone configuration with EPC) as that will only help in giving higher speed which might end up utilized with Social media, video upload, WhatsApp, TikTok, etc, so that will not solve the purpose.
Standalone 5G can provide real benefits in this scenario where Network Slicing<https://www.nokia.com/blog/promising-technology-powerful-business-enabler/> technology can be used appropriately used to giving the dedicated network slice for
1. Academic institution's website/live lectures/ online exams/results/upload and download of hand notes
2. We can move towards driverless transport management which will help move goods from one place to another with less human intervention.
3. There will not be a requirement of manpower everywhere for observing the machinery in big industries as it will be possible with low latency and IoT connectivity possibility with 5G.
4. In medical industries, there will be the possibility of remote surgeries that keep the requirement of many doctors in hospitals. As doctors will be able to share expertise and help to local staff remotely and quickly.
5. More and more sensor devices can be connected with the dedicated network slice and will help to reduce the human intervention on a big scale.
These are only a few but important use cases which makes the case for early 5G rollout. We have to build a 5G network first for these essentials services rather than for social medial content and this is very much possible with 5G Core.
5G Eco-System: Yes this can not be done overnight as we are short of many things like 5G supported device, 5G Equippments- Radio and especially 5G Core is still evolving. But all these technical development can be put on fast track once the government will start showing their support for MSP, Chipset Manufacturers, Equipment vendor, Handset manufacturers and make sure they will get all the benefits for producing more 5G devices.
Still, there are options available through which 5G benefits can be given to a user in the form of WiFi services(FWPA<https://www.nokia.com/networks/solutions/fixed-access-network-slicing/>). So we can provide high speed in rural areas as well so that students from all the places can benefit from this.
